We recently delivered a British Canoeing DSM Level 1 for Freestyle during a BC Coaching Matters Event. Great to see so many coaches wanting to get actively involved in freestyle. It has so much to offer clubs whether they’re whitewater or pool based.
The DSM L1 showcases freestyle paddlesport, providing the coaching foundations to be able to coach freestyle skills.

We kickstarted the day with a extract from a video called Game by Polly Green. This provided a great insight into competitive and recreational freestyle and its lifestyle benefits, before discussing a few current hot topics. Then we were straight into the practical application of coaching beginning with human movement, exploring a series of fun activities to help participants better understand how to achieve basic freestyle skills,. Next came a range of land and water based activities looking at how to break skills down to improve learning. Culminating in running through a series of coaching sessions pulling together what we had covered together to introduce skills such as cartwheels, splitwheels, loops and lots more. Progressively getting the coaches to take the lead and build confidence in their new coaching skills.

It was a great day and I would like to say a big thanks to Lesley for organising the event. It was great to see the Kool Kayakers Club from Doncaster, South Yorkshire. These guys rock and if you want to get involved then I would highly recommend them. Their details are below…
