3 Star Award White Water Kayak Training & Assessment (British Canoeing)

3 Star Train&Ass Image 1Get yourself off to a flying start in your new sport. The British Canoeing 3 star provides the building blocks to become a white water paddler. The aim is to provide you with the tools to be able to be a competent performer in Grade 2+ environments and have the ability to paddle unsupervised, with similar standard paddlers. At the end of the course you’ll gain personalised feedback, designed to continue your paddling development.

The Learning Outcomes:

  • Understanding the core principles of boat control in unstable environments.
  • Rolling techniques and how this works in a moving water environment.
  • Establishing the link between paddling techniques and tactics.
  • Personal risk management and Group Awareness.
  • Essential rescue techniques for moving water environments.

Pre-requisites:

  • Hold the British Canoeing 2 Star Award or have the equivalent ability
  • Be able to swim confidently wearing appropriate paddling equipment.
  • Logbook required for assessment – Evidence of at least 10 freestyle sessions (20 hours).

4 Star Award White Water Kayak Training (British Canoeing)

3 Star Training Image 1Want to improve your techniques and tactics for running moderate water? Then the British Canoeing 4 star might be for you. In this course we’ll coach all the skills required to paddle the river in a fluent dynamic manner, staying one step ahead of the rivers demands. You’ll cover the latest river running and leadership techniques, and gain a range of self-coaching tools to continue your development after the course.

The Learning Outcomes:

  • Dynamic river running skills on grade 3 rivers
  • Boat and bank based safety and rescue skills
  • Boat and bank based recovery of  equipment
  • Incident management and rescue skills
  • Leadership strategies, judgement and decision-making

Pre-requisites:

  • 3 Star Award or demonstration of equivalent (grade II water) paddling ability.

4 Star Award White Water Kayak Assessment (British Canoeing)

Sweetwater Coaching pride ourselves on running open, friendly assessments designed to put you at ease and allowing you to perform at your best. During the assessment we’ll observe you paddling on moderate water with a group of like-minded paddlers. This 2 day assessment uses a non-intrusive approach to evaluate your group skills and personal paddling against the 4 star standard.

Assessment Requirements Overview:

  • The ability to pre-plan trips and select appropriate equipment for the activity.
  • Confident skillful paddling on grade 2/3 white water, whilst showing the ability to identify hazards and choose suitable lines.
  • Demonstrate skillful application of appropriate boat and bank based rescues including the safe recovery of equipment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely lead a small group of competent paddlers on grade 2, whilst ensuring swift decision making and clear communication.

Pre-requisites:

  • Stamped & Completed CR form authorising assessment.
  • Home Nation Comprehensive Membership.
  • BC 4 Star White Water Leader training within previous 3 years.
  • BC White Water Safety & Rescue training or Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician.
  • BC Recognised 2-day First Aid within last 3 years.

In this course we’ll coach all the skills required to paddle the river in a fluent dynamic manner maintaining group control. You’ll cover the latest river running and leadership techniques and gain a range of self-coaching tools to continue your development after the course.

  • Planning advanced white water trips and organising equipment and logistics.
  • Establish a foundation of advanced leadership and river running skills.
  • White water anatomy and operating in advanced environments.
  • Scouting in advance environments to identify safe and realistic lines.
  • Boat and bank based rescue skills for advanced environments.

  • BC 4 Star Leader White Water Kayak Award or BC Level 3 Inland.

During the assessment we’ll observe you paddling on advanced water with a group of like-minded paddlers. This 2 day assessment uses a non-intrusive approach to evaluate your group skills and personal paddling against the 5 star standard.

Assessment Requirements Overview:

  • Fluent and decisive paddling whilst using or avoiding features to aid descent.
  • Appropriate leadership strategies, judgement and decision-making.
  • Group leadership of both experienced and inexperienced advanced environment paddlers.
  • Demonstrate skilful application of appropriate bank and boat base rescue skills.
  • Effective team leader and team member in rescues and incident management.

Pre-requisites:

  • 5 Star White Water Leader training within previous 3 years.
  • Advanced White Water Safety & Rescue.
  • Recognised 2-day First Aid (within last 3 years).
  • Logged experience of a broad range of grade III-IV rivers.

4 Star Award Freestyle Training (British Canoeing)

Want to improve your freestyle skills? The British Canoeing freestyle 4 star might be for you.  In this course you’ll cover the essential skills to safely paddle and lead other competent paddlers on sections of ‘park and play’ moderate white-water (river sections no more than 500 meters in length or on a managed site). The 4 star is predominantly performance orientated, and you’ll be coached the most current freestyle skills and essential leadership techniques by world leading coaches. To continue your development after the training we include a range of self-coaching tools.

  • Learn the latest freestyle techniques and manoeuvres outlined in the award.
  • Establishing the link between paddling techniques and tactic.
  • Personal risk management and leadership skills.
  • Essential rescue techniques for moving water environments.

4 Star Award Freestyle Assessment (British Canoeing)

Sweetwater Coaching pride ourselves on running open, friendly assessments designed to put you at ease and allow you to perform at your best. During the assessment we’ll observe your freestyle moves and the ability to perform them both individually and as part of a routine. This 2 day assessment uses a non-intrusive approach to evaluate that you have a solid foundation in freestyle and the skill level required to lead a group of up to 4 paddlers in appropriate locations.

The Assessment Overview:

  • Perform a series of core skills (e.g. moves such as Cartwheels, Loops and Blunts etc.) whilst ensuring that core elements (e.g. body posture, rotation and synchronicity) of these moves are evident.
  • During the assessment the candidates should show they have the ability to lead others on the successful descent of a 500m section of a grade 2(3) river.

Pre-requisites:

  • Stamped & Completed CR form authorising assessment.
  • Home Nation Comprehensive Membership.
  • BC 4 Star Freestyle Leader training (within last 3 years).
  • BC White Water Safety & Rescue or Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician.
  • BC Recognised 2-day First Aid (within last 3 years).
