British Canoeing Safety and Rescue

Sweetwater operate in a diverse range of white water environments including isolated regions. This provides a unique insight into the field of advanced safety and rescue. Our wealth of knowledge is incorporated into our British Canoeing safety and rescue courses covering all aspects of safety and rescue techniques required to prevent and deal with emergency situations in a range of environments.

 

Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (British Canoeing)

FSRTThis 1 day course provides paddlers with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely in a sheltered water environment and to be able to deal with common emergencies.

Learning outcomes:

  • Familiarisation with essential safety equipment and its use.
  • Assessing risk and applying safety and rescue protocols.
  • Effective group management and communication.
  • Bank and boat based rescue techniques.
  • Rescue techniques for unconscious or entrapped paddlers.

Pre-requisites:

Candidates wishing to attend Foundation Safety and Rescue Training must be aged 14 years or over and meet the following requirements:

  • Able to swim in normal paddle clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions.
  • Boat-based participants must also hold the current BC 2 Star Award or be of equivalent ability due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to complete the course.
  • Bank-based participants accessing the course are not required to hold the BC 2 Star Award. However, they should be prepared to fully participate in all relevant aspects of the course.

White Water Safety and Rescue (British Canoeing)

An ideal choice for those wanting to paddle canoes and kayaks on grade 2/3 white water safely. This fun practical course covers the fundamentals of river safety, group management and appropriate rescue techniques. WWSR serves as a pre-requisite for the 4 star white water leader award.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Knowledge of the white water environment and assessing risk.
  • Familiarisation with safety and rescue equipment and its appropriate uses.
  • Incident management and communication in emergency situation.
  • Personal survival and dealing with potential tricky situations.
  • Safety and rescue techniques used to deal with casualties and equipment recovery.

Pre-requisites:

Due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to participate in this training course, candidates should be:

  • Be confident in their ability to paddle on grade 2 water.
  • Be confident swimming in normal kayak clothing suitable for a moving water environment.

A first aid certificate is not a pre-requisite. However holding a first aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers.

Advanced White Water Safety and Rescue (British Canoeing)

A course designed for those wanting to operate safely, and effectively lead in advanced environments. We cover numerous skills and scenarios including  operating in steep environments, scouting, incident management, recovery of equipment and first aid considerations. This course enables you to progress to assessment knowing you have the skills to supervise a group both on and off the water.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To improve individuals awareness of safety skills in the advanced river environment.
  • To further develop personal survival skills.
  • To develop and practice advanced rescue techniques.
  • To develop and practice the need for structure in advanced emergency situations.
  • To outline advanced rescue protocols that prioritise the safety of the individual above all others

Pre-requisites:

Due to the paddling environment and the boat control required the candidate should:

  • Be confident in their ability to kayak on grade 3-4 white water.
  • Have attended a British Canoeing White Water Safety and Rescue Training course (ideally in the previous three years).
